Kentucky

Ohio River Valley Chapter

Email: Leonardsandra@msn.com

The Chapter usually meets on the second Saturday of each month at Barnes and Noble, 801 South Hurstbourne Parkway, Louisville. Writer's Support Group meets at 11:30 in the Café to review participants' works and discuss topics relating to writing and publishing. Business meeting begins in the Café at 12:30.

The featured speaker session begins at 1:30 in the armchair lounge section near the front of the store. Sessions are informal; speakers talk for about three quarters of an hour, followed by a question and answer period. Attendance varies from about twenty to approximately thirty-five, depending on a number of factors. Members drive from Indianapolis, IN; Cincinnati, OH and Lexington, KY for meetings. Although predominately women, men are encouraged to join. Jeffrey Marks is a member whose biography of female mystery writer Craig Rice, Who Was That Lady? was nominated for Edgar and Agatha awards.

Topics for the meetings are varied. We have mystery authors talk about their books, panels on writing-related subjects (a panel on self-publishing, an attorney explaining copyrights and trademarks), and forensic topics (serial killer profiling, skull reconstruction, lethal poisons, as well as, a field trip to the Crime Scene Unit of the LPD). There is often a book signing after the speaker finishes so listeners may buy a personalized copy of an author's latest work.

The Minnesota Chapter meets on the first Tuesday of each month from September through June (not in July and August) at Once Upon A Crime Mystery Bookstore, 604 W 26th St, Minneapolis MN 55405 (map here).

Meetings begin with any general business and announcements, then we spend a few minutes discussing a previously selected crime fiction book. Usually a speaker or presenter attends, and topics for the meetings are varied. We often have forensic experts talk (recent examples: state toxicologist, canine police unit, crime scene artist, homicide detective, regional coroner). Speakers tend to talk for 20-40 minutes, followed by a question and answer period. Occasionally we assemble a panel of experts on writing or publishing or have an field trip such as a recent one to the State's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Members are an even mix of readers, authors, and aspiring writers. Attendance generally varies from 15 to 25. Although predominately women, men are encouraged to join, and we count William Kent Krueger, Rich Thompson, Carl Brookins, Gary Shulze, and Michael Allen Mallory as members. All are welcome.
