Award-winning novelist and screenwriter Alexandra “Alex” Sokoloff will present her internationally-acclaimed workshop, Screenwriting Tricks for Authors. She’ll teach novelists and screenwriters essential film structure and visual storytelling techniques. She’ll talk about acts and sequences, and the key elements of story narrative, focusing on mysteries and thrillers. But more than that, Alex will help us understand how the structure used in film writing really works, and how we as novelists can use it in plotting and revision. Her workshops are interactive and dynamic—just like she is!
Why look at movies? Because, as Alex says, “movies are like a skeleton, an x-ray, of a story. It’s a lot easier to see structure in a movie than it is in a book.” We’ve all seen so many movies and tv shows that we understand their structure intuitively. By making that understanding more explicit, we can have then layer that story blueprint with the complexity that novels require.
Then we’ll hear from Canadian mystery writer Maureen Jennings, author of The Murdoch Mysteries, the basis for the terrific long-running tv series set in Victorian Toronto. In addition to writing the Murdoch novels and two other series, Maureen has worked on several Murdoch scripts, and co-developed her novel, Beware This Boy, into the concept for the tv series, Bomb Girls. Maureen will talk about adaptation, developing a tv concept, and her experiences in the worlds of books and tv.
To tie it all together, that evening, Alex will screen a classic movie and comment on story structure.
