Overview: Dr. Katherine Ramsland, professor of forensic psychology and criminology, is a renowned author (including How to Catch a Killer), clinician, researcher and consultant for death investigations. She will describe the typical roles of forensic psychologists, show how they might work on a case, explain how they get credentialed, and discuss the areas in which she has consulted or trained other forensic professionals.

“The range of skills that forensic psychologists can offer is greater than what we typically see in fiction. Overlooked activities offer opportunities for fresh characters and plots. This presentation will list and explain how psychologists interact with the legal and investigative system. Although most practitioners are licensed clinicians with a specialization in forensic issues, we also see consultants advising on death investigations, criminal behavior, jury evaluations, and interrogations. Many practitioners work in prisons or forensic psychiatric institutions, especially with sex offenders. Psychologists can be also be involved in emergency service fields, such as hostage negotiations, mass fatalities, and crisis response. Some develop a niche specialization, which makes them the go-to expert for cops and courts alike.” There will be ample opportunity for questions.
