Sisters Solve Mysteries: In Celebration of Booksellers and Librarians

Librarians solve mysteries every day.

Booksellers solve mysteries every day.

Let’s thank them for their efforts!

Sisters in Crime celebrates 25 years of working with librarians and booksellers in support of women writing crime fiction with a special event on Saturday, April 21, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (local time) across the U.S. and Canada.

You are invited to participate in this event, SinC’s first “Booksellers and Librarians Solve Mysteries Every Day” celebration, by shadowing a librarian or a bookseller for six hours on April 21 to learn how they solve mysteries daily. As a volunteer in the stacks, on the floor and behind the scenes, your job will be to do whatever a manager asks of the regular staff—shelving, bagging, sweeping, assisting patrons, pulling holds, making recommendations, taking out the trash, checking in returned books, etc.

To spread the word about the way booksellers and librarians serve their communities and assist readers, we ask that you tweet, facebook and blog about your experiences—before, during (especially) and after the event. This is our chance to shine a bit of a spotlight on these hardworking—and often unsung—heroes and heroines of our communities.

As an author, you are no doubt on familiar terms with your local booksellers and librarians. To participate in this SinC effort, please do the following:

  1. Select your favorite library or bookstore, where you will be spending time onsite on April 21.
  2. Contact the store or library to make arrangements to spend time with them on April 21 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
  3. Identify two media contacts in your chosen community.
  4. Use the form at to send your location and media info in to me. I will be keeping a spreadsheet to ensure that only one SinC author is scheduled at any spot.

SinC will support you and your chosen location with a press release template that you can fill in for maximum news value to your community. In addition, SinC will also provide a news release with a national slant for your use.

Sisters in Crime has set up an event-specific website at, where you'll find more program details. The site is bare bones at the moment, but we’ll be fleshing it out. (Your questions will help us build an FAQ page.) We’ll also be setting up a Facebook event page, a Twitter hashtag and any other virtual and social media to get the word out about the event.
