Sisters in Crime National Covid-19 Update

Sisters in Crime rolls out tools for authors in quarantine

An update on the Sisters in Crime response to the threat of COVID-19: As a community based in gathering to share stories, Sisters in Crime takes very seriously the threat of the COVID-19 virus to our members and readers. To help flatten the curve of incidence of coronavirus in the United States, we are continuing and implementing the following measures:

Continuing:

A full suspension of all events originating from Sisters in Crime. Our members’ breakfast at Malice Domestic has been canceled along with the conference. If you were registered for the breakfast, look for an email from Sisters in Crime about your refund. It went out this week.

Encouragement for chapters and members to cancel all travel plans and events that require travel for themselves or from others through May. Please follow the strictest local, state, and federal guidelines on meetings, events, and travel until further notice. Move meetings or speaking events to Zoom, Skype, Facebook Live, Google Hangouts, Crowdcast, or other virtual gathering applications that allow both speakers and audience to participate from home.

Additional measures:

We asked Sisters in Crime friend and publicist Dana Kaye for advice on moving events to a virtual space. Read her advice here. Members of Sisters in Crime will receive an invitation to join Dana’s online session “Launching a Book During Quarantine” for 65% off the event fee (normally $15; $5.25 with code). The session is live on Friday, April 3, 2020, at 12 p.m. noon Eastern Daylight Time but available in replay afterward for registered participants.

Our own annual writing workshop, SinC Into Great Writing, has been moved online. Save the date for the morning of Oct. 3, 2020. Speakers will be announced to members by email as soon as they are finalized. This will be free to all Sisters in Crime members.

We are investigating virtual meeting options for canceled Speakers Bureau events.

We are offering to our chapters a one-time Event Grant reimbursement allowance of up to $400 to prepare their groups for virtual meetings. These grants for chapters can be used for audio-visual equipment and/or virtual meeting subscriptions. Chapter leaders will get specifics through the iO listserv.

We are extending the deadline for use of 2020 Education Grants. Recipients may now use their grants in the calendar year 2021. If you are a recipient eligible to extend your grant timeline, you will receive further details by email.

We are reaching out to independent bookstores to encourage them to apply for our We Love Bookstores prize. Application here. We will also be drawing the rest of the 2020 winners in a shortened timeline to get the $500 checks out to bookstores while the need is great.

Please, for the sake of all our communities, practice social distancing and safety precautions. Thank you for your patience with our organization and other volunteers in the mystery community as we all figure out how to best serve you in light of this situation.
