The Dorothy Cannell Scholarship offers $1,000 annually to enable one member of the Sisters in Crime Guppies chapter to attend Malice Domestic.

UPDATE (1/12/2020): The recipient of the 2020 award is Rose Kerr. Congratulations! The award will be used for attendance at Malice Domestic May 1-3, 2020.

Rose Kerr is a former distance education administrator and an insatiable mystery reader. She and her husband raised their children in a small Northern Ontario town on the shores of Lake Superior. She has written a cozy mystery set in a town similar to the one she and her family lived in. She’s a member of Sisters in Crime and a Guppy. Rose is represented by Dawn Dowdle of Blue Ridge Literary Agency. Rose is looking forward to her first Malice Domestic Conference, meeting authors, fans and bloggers, and learning more about the traditional mystery.

Entries for the Dorothy Cannell Scholarship to Malice Domestic 2020 are closed.

Being a writer often means stealing time from your family, your friends, and your day job to spend all those hours at your writing desk. As a result, many authors, both unpublished and published, don’t give themselves permission to attend mystery conferences. But these gatherings can enrich your writing, your writing career, and your life.

For author Dorothy Cannell, as for so many others, meeting mystery readers and writers at the annual Malice Domestic Conference in Bethesda, Maryland had a lasting impact on her writing and her life. This scholarship, named for Dorothy and supported by an anonymous benefactor in honor of one of the most enduring author/agent partnerships in mystery publishing, is intended to offer another writer the same transformative opportunity.

Deadline: The entry period for the 2020 scholarship is October 21 – December 31, 2019.

Eligibility: All members of the Sisters in Crime Guppy chapter, both published and unpublished, may submit an entry for the scholarship. Named for the Great UnPublished, the thriving Guppy online community includes hundreds of published and unpublished members. For more information about the Guppies,  go to

Scholarship: The scholarship is for $1,000.00 to subsidize the costs of attending Malice Domestic. In 2020, the conference will be held on April 30-May 3, at the Bethesda North Marriott & Conference Center. For information on Malice Domestic, go to
